Woodland Enhancement
Woods can be beautiful and incredible places to explore and walk within. The changes in light and dappled shade create stunning effects all the more enjoyable when offering respite from the heat of the summer. In spring, our woods explode with spring flowers and native bulbs such as the iconic English Bluebell.
Neglected woods can often suffer a loss of biodiversity if the shade becomes too deep or certain plants such as holly or bramble smother the more delicate vegetation.
Babylon Design has worked in several woods, sometimes with tree surgeons to fell unwanted trees, restoring the woodland to a more diverse and attractive state.
One of the woods Babylon Design worked on was over 30 acres and became a regular winter project. Initially completely overgrown, large amounts of dead conifers prevented the ground flora from growing and made walking through it impossible. An ambitious programme of clearing dying conifers was implemented alongside the planting of half a million English Bluebells, a more diverse tree mix and the creation of moss and grass paths through regular mowing. Sculptural heaps were created using the cleared timber and the woods quickly became a favourite walking spot for the owners and their dogs. After 5 years the wood boasted 6 types of wild orchids that increased rapidly under the maintenance regime developed.
