Bulbs

Bulbs form an essential part of any garden but are often under utilized and misplaced. Careful selection and planting can extend the flowering of borders throughout the year and add seasonal splashes of colour under trees and shrubs and in lawn and meadows. If the right species and varieties are chosen, extensive carpets of self-sown seedlings create dramatic carpets of colour mirroring the displays that occur in British woodlands in spring.

Babylon Design offers an autumn bulb planting service where we return to new gardens and plant thousands of bulbs between the herbaceous plantings. Daffodils, Tulips, Alliums, Crocus, Snowdrops, Camassias, Hyacinths, Eremurus and Cyclamen extend the season of colour from autumn through to mid summer. The exact varieties are chosen so that their colours and forms compliment the existing planting and enhance the existing colour scheme.

Naturalising bulbs such as daffodils, bluebells and snowdrops is another service offered. Orchards, meadows and woods all offer potential to create dramatic effects with massed bulbs spreading and increasing each year. The largest scheme to date involved the planting of 100,000 snowdrops and 300,000 bluebells in a 30 acre beech wood over 2 years. Smaller schemes around trees, in orchards and along verges also offer an easy to maintain and dramatic seasonal display.
